The author was the managing editor of a small medical journal for 15 years and logged more than 25 years in printing and publishing before retiring. She now lives in Denver and is a news junkie, registered independent voter, and occasional online game player.
“Pied” type is loose type that has been spilled or tossed into disarray. Until it has been re-sorted by size, font, and character into the appropriate storage cases, the typesetter cannot use it to compose new pages. The term “pied” is used occasionally to describe scrambled text on a page or screen.
The nickname “-30-” is a journalistic device dating back to the 1800s, when telegraphers tapped out “XXX” at the end of their transmissions. Over the years the Roman numeral XXX morphed into -30-, but continued to designate the end of a story.
“Morgue” is journalistic jargon for old files or archives.
